About Us

The Computer Science Department at Coastal Carolina University provides high quality training that prepares students for careers in computer science and advanced training at the graduate level. At Coastal you will find a dedicated faculty that cares about you as an individual. The Computer Science faculty is committed to excellence in teaching and to providing an outstanding educational experience for its students. While enjoying small-sized classes, you will find an up-to-date curriculum that offers a wide range of Computer Science courses.

The Department of Computer Science recognizes the importance of providing a high quality education for its majors. Furthermore, we recognize that a part of our responsibility is to determine how successfully we have accomplished this. As a result, we have identified three major content areas which we will address in terms of our curriculum and several specific objectives within that framework.


Perspectives

  • To develop an awareness of technological advances occurring in the field of computer science.
  • To develop an understanding and appreciation for ethical behavior as it relates to information processing.

Computer Science Core Curriculum

  • To provide an understanding of the theoretical foundations of computer science and the principles of algorithm design and analysis.
  • To provide an understanding of the principles of implementation and documentation of algorithms in a modern high-level structured programming language.
  • To provide an understanding of the principles, organization and design of file processing and database management systems.
  • To provide an understanding of computer organization, computer architecture, operating systems, information structures, and the design and organization of programming languages.
  • To develop oral and written communication proficiency.
  • To develop the ability to work cooperatively as members of a team on a software development project.

Major Emphasis

  • To provide additional knowledge in one area of emphasis involving technical/scientific or commercial applications.
